"Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time."

Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933–2020) was a trailblazing jurist and tireless advocate for equality whose intellect and perseverance transformed the landscape of American law. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in 1954 and her law degree from Columbia Law School in 1959, forging a path in a profession that offered few opportunities for women. After teaching law and working with the ACLU, she was appointed in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1993, she made history as the second woman, and the first Jewish woman, appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Throughout her career, Ginsburg fought unrelentingly for women’s rights and gender equality, most notably authoring the majority opinion in United States v. Virginia, which struck down the exclusion of women from the Virginia Military Institute.
